Whenever people are talking about weather changes like global warming, mercury rise, drought, flood, pollution etc.. in cafeteria, snack bar,
chit-chat time, so on, I had observed
that the first thing is to blame the society, other people (except me!!) and the
government. When first time (few years ago) I was involved in this discussion,
I also started preaching that, everybody should involve in planting trees, do
rain water harvesting, save water, save earth, go green, blah, blah, blah. So as usual, as
an adult, one day I started preaching kids in my apartment that, value of water, trees and how pollution is affecting earth. So I started telling them that "you
need to plant a tree" to save earth from danger. The preaching went fine
and all kids nodded that they will do. But, a small girl voice from the corner
came that "Uncle, Uncle, how many trees have you planted?"...oops...got
a googly.. So luckily I had planted a tree when I was in my 6th standard in my
village. Reason: 3 toppers from the 5th
standard will get a chance to plant a tree in front of my school and need to
take care of the plant for next 6 months. I was happy that I got a privilege. And not happy that I need to do watering every day for next 6 months L. So, I planted it and
even scratched my initials on it. In front of kids, I proudly said that YES I had planted a tree in my school. Then
the same voice from that girl came "Uncle, only one tree? you said we need to
plant many?". Hmm.. I felt ashamed. Because I did not do much
planting. That incident onward, I stopped preaching. Then I started reading
lot of articles, watching videos about "Saving Earth" and got lot of
knowledge. But, what is the use of the knowledge until I put that into
implementation. Over the period of time, I realized that, it is better to become selfish on
this "Saving Earth" matter. Here are the my selfishness resolutions.
- I want to plant a tree in front of my house so that it gives good air and shade to me and my family only. (Achieved) I don't worry whether it helps earth, or the society.
- I will do rainwater harvesting in my house to reduce the amount of water bill (in progress). I don’t worry whether it helps water supplying body or not.
- I will put solar water heater so that I will save electricity bill (In progress) I don’t worry whether it helps electricity supplying body or not.
- I will put solar panels to minimize the dependency on the electricity body and power outages(Planning phase). Again I don’t worry whether it helps the electricity supplying body or not.
So if everyone
start becoming selfish like me, what a change will happen.. oops.. again
preaching.. sorry.. I don’t worry whether other people implement it or not. Because
I am very selfish on this matter.
